Summer Lovin’

Summer is knocking on the door, and I don’t know about you, but after being cooped up in the house for months, my happiness has been fueled by the nice days. Getting outside to go for a walk around my neighborhood, or discovering a local hiking spot, or even just hanging out in my yard, have been the best moments during this pandemic. It has meant extra time with my children, when we’d normally be bouncing from one sporting event to the next and living that fast paced, on the go, not a second to spare, lifestyle.

As restrictions are lifting, and salons are opening, it is definitely time to analyze your current and future hair situation. What better time to try out something new, or embrace yourself at your au natural state.

Throw It Back

The 90’s are back. I am not sad about this at all. Last year I talked about hair accessories being a big trend, and they are even hotter this summer. Look out for big clips, cute head wraps, and chunky headbands. And yes, mix and match these. Have fun.

Here are some of my personal favs

Or these fancy clips that can be worn day or night. You can find them here.

Silver Fox

Okay. Let’s chat. Going gray has been a “thing” for a while. If there is ever a time to take the leap, it is now. There are so many options once you make this decision. I highly recommend discussing your personal options with your stylist. I can not stress enough, if you have been considering this for a while- the time us now.

From a stylist who is all about hair color, nothing makes me happier than seeing people embrace their gorgeous, natural color. Most are surprised at the variety and stunning shades that are growing. And it is freeing, so very freeing. Take the leap. Love your true self.

Chunky Monkey

No, Kelly Clarkson chunky highlights are not coming back. I will not allow it. I refuse. Don’t even ask.

“Moneypieces” is a technical stylist term given to the bright, face framing pop of lighter color around your face. If Kylie Jenner’s quarantine bright, chunky pieces of hair in front of her face were any indication of what’s to come, you can expect everyone rocking this look this summer.

You don’t need to go as bold as Kylie. There are so many options. And so many color choices to play around with. I absolutely love keeping the hair around the face slightly lighter. I think it enhances your facial features and color. Look at any kid’s hair who has been running around outside in the summer sun. There is a natural lightness that occurs, and it is awesome.

If going bold in just one place isn’t your thing, and your heart is set on making your overall highlights thicker, I’d recommend going for a root smudge to accompany them. This is going to soften the root color and give a more natural look to your hair. You don’t want anyone singing “yikes, stripes! Fruit striped gum”, when looking at your hair. And if I have just aged myself with that old jingle, so be it.

Going, Going….

Dark! I truly believe the uncertainty of the world is going to give people a bit of pause when coloring their hair. While things open up, there is no guarantee that we won’t be back to a stay at home order, at some point. (I know, I know, I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer. I’m trying to mentally prepare myself, and us all). I predict a lot of rich browns and auburn shades. I think embracing your specific hair level, but punching up a specific tone is a great way to get a gorgeous color without committing to too much maintenance.

Three Words

LIVED. IN. COLOR. This is my wheelhouse. And my personal favorite look. It is not going anywhere. If you are booking for babylights, balayage, sombre, highlights with a shadow root or root smudge, you are likely looking for a lived-in-look. It is that I-was-born-like-this, I spent a ton of time outside, they are just natural highlights, look. AND I AM ALL FOR IT. This is a low maintenance , totally customizable color that is going to bring out your beauty. It works for brunettes, redheads and blondes, and every shade in between.

Pinky Up

Rose Gold, blush, baby pink, pinky peach. This is a highly debated color, and i will not even touch anyone’s head unless they show me multiple pictures of what that color means to them. Because, you guys, everyone sees it differently. This shade has been pretty hot for a few years, but it has skyrocketed over the past few months. I love it. Know your shade. Cooler pinks are going to look best with warm skin. Peachier pinks will look better on cool skin tones.

I have seen so many people doing color depositing conditioners to acheive this color. I’m not opposed. Here is my absolute fav

I have been a huge fan of BLEACH London for years. This color is everything. It will last 2-10 washes, depending on your base color and hair’s porosity. Grab yours here.

Hello, Hydration

With all this talk of color, I wouldn’t be a good stylist if I didn’t give you a lecture on hydrating your hair. Keep your locks looking luscious, feeling soft and manageable. And you can pat yourself on the back for purchasing a vegan, cruelty free product that is color safe, won’t weigh your hair down, and will lock in moisture.

GlossME is simply amazing. Don’t forget to grab the deep conditioning mask as well as their serum. Give your hair some summer love. Grab it here

The Long and Short of It

But what about cuts? What’s happening? Cute, choppy bobs and long, straight hair will be everywhere. Angled, long bobs are being replaced by fun, and blunt or textured. Mermaid-esque, long, a la Cher hair is also going to be huge. You can pair either look with any of the accessories I mentioned, as well as the colors we went over. Hello, versatility!

Trends come and go, and I think it is important to embrace what works for you and makes you happy. Be your own kind of beautiful. And remember, hair is supposed to be fun.
